Table Activities- Our table activities this week include an Easter sensory bin, Easter dot painting, decorating wooden crosses, a jelly bean graph activity, Easter coloring pages, Easter clay mats, Easter foam craft and Easter egg play.
Small Group Activities-This week's small group will involve playing Easter BINGO, making a cross suncatcher, adding an Easter picture to our journal and making an Easter lily from a tracing of our hand.
Large Group Activities- Easter egg hunt and basket toss. There will be an Easter egg hunt for both classes on Thursday. If you are here Thursdays, you can do your hunt ahead of time!
Books of the Week- "Little Bible Heroes Easter" by Victoria Kovacs and "The Easter Lily Parable" by Liz Curtis Higgs.
Bible Story- Our story this week is Jesus being arrested and crucified. We will go into as much detail as is age appropriate while still making the point that Jesus suffered tremendously for us.
On Thursday, after the disciples shared a meal with Jesus, they went out to pray in the garden of Gethsemane. While they were there, guards came with Judas and arrested Jesus. He was brought before the high priest and many false charges were laid against him. He did not defend himself. The Jews could not sentence a man to death, so they asked to be seen by Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor. He could give a man a death sentence. They explained to him that this Jesus claimed to be a son of God and be God himself. According to their laws, that was blasphemy and deserving of death. Pilate heard the case and tried to appease them by having Jesus beaten and whipped. Pilate sent Jesus to King Herod, thinking he may take responsibility and sentence Jesus, but neither Herod or Pilate condemned him on their own. Finally, Pilate questioned the people. It was custom for a prisoner to be released at the Passover. Pilate gave them the choice of releasing Barabbas, a known insurrectionist and murderer, or Jesus. The crowd chose Barabbas. When he asked what he should to do Jesus, the crowd cried out, "Crucify him!" Pilate condemned Jesus to death by crucifixion.
Jesus was led to a hill outside of Jerusalem. He was forced to carry his cross, but because of his physical state, he could not. The Roman soldiers grabbed a man out of the crowd and forced him to carry the cross. Jesus was nailed to the cross by his wrists and feet. He spoke seven times. The first words were a prayer for those nailing him- Father, forgive them, they do not know what they are doing.
He spoke to the thief on the cross, assuring him of his salvation when he said he believed. He made sure his mother was taken care of. He asked for a drink, fulfilling an Old Testament prophecy. He cried out to a God who had forsaken him. Finally, he said it is finished and commended his spirit into his Father's care.
Jesus suffered all of this not because of anything he had done wrong, but because of what we had done. We deserve punishment, but because of his punishment, we have peace between us and God. That is why the day we remember this is called Good Friday, because it is so good for us!
