Bible Story- This week's story is a familiar one. We are hearing the story of David and Goliath. Samuel was an old man now and had anointed a king over Israel named Saul. Saul was the picture of a king, tall and strong, but his heart was not the heart of a king of God's people. God had chosen a young shepherd boy named David to replace him. He did not know this yet, only Samuel and David and his family knew.
Saul and his army were facing off with the Philistines, a continued enemy of the Israelites in both who they worshipped and territory wise. The Philistines had a champion, a giant named Goliath. They challenged the Israelite army to a one on one battle. Choose someone to fight Goliath, if they win, you win, if he wins, we win!
No one was willing to risk it! The giant came out twice a day, yelling insults against Israel and her God. The soldiers hid in their tents, no one willing to confront the enemy.
David's brothers were part of Saul's army and his father sent him with food for his brothers and he witnessed Goliath's mockery. He was shocked! No one challenged him? Especially because of what he said about the one true God?? David decided he would challenge Goliath. His brothers discouraged and belittled him. He wasn't even a soldier, he was just a shepherd! Eventually word got around to King Saul and he called David to his tent. There he tried to talk David into at least wearing his armor. David refused because he couldn't move easily in it. David would meet Goliath with his weapon of choice- a sling and 5 smooth stones.
David went out to meet Goliath and Goliath laughed. He mocked David and God, "Am I a dog that you come at me with a stick?" David replied, "I come in the name of the LORD God Almighty!" David put one stone in his sling, ran toward the giant who was shielded and covered in armor and God guided that stone to Goliath's forehead where it sunk in deep. Goliath fell down dead.
What a witness to David's faith and the faithfulness of the One True God! Even though the rest of the army did not trust God to defeat the giant, God still did it for them! And he does this for us! Getting rid of our biggest giants, sin, death and the devil! The giants come tumbling down!!
