This week we will look and listen for the sound of Ff and have fun and learn about feathers and the birds that wear them!
Our KDI for the week is fine motor skills- Children demonstrate dexterity and hand-eye coordination in using their small muscles. We will be getting a lot of practice with this this week beading with feathers, poking them through colanders, lots of little finger work!
Table Activities- This week our table activities include beading on feathers, experimenting with feathers in water and oil, poking feathers through colanders, cutting paper feathers, a real feather cutting sensory bin, coloring feather pictures, painting with feathers.
Small Group Activities- We will be exploring feathers with magnifying glasses and talking about their parts, adding Ff is for feather to our journal, and gluing feathers on a paper bird.
Large Group Activities- This week we will try to make wind with feathers, catch feathers and find some hidden feathers outside.
Books of the Week- "Birds" by Kevin Henkes, "Feathers: Not Just for Flying" by Melissa Stewart and "Feathers for Lunch" by Lois Ehlert.
Bible Story- This week we move way ahead in history. Israel has re-entered the land of Canaan and is being ruled by God through judges that He chooses. The last judge to rule Israel was Samuel. Samuel was the son of a woman named Hannah. Before Samuel was born, Hannah had to wait a long time to have children. She was very sad. She went with her husband to worship at the tabernacle each year and one year as she was praying for a child, she was overcome with sorrow. The priest, named Eli, asked her what was troubling her. She finally was able to tell him that she longed for a child. He told her God had heard her prayer and by this time the next year, she would have a son. She was overjoyed and God kept his promise! (He always does!)
Samuel and Hannah stayed home from the tabernacle until Samuel was about 5 years old. At that time, Hannah and Samuel returned to the tabernacle together and Hannah presented her son to Eli. She gave Samuel into the work of the church. He would live at the tabernacle now, helping out with whatever needed to be done and learn about God and his love and commitment to the people of Israel. Once a year Hannah visited and brought Samuel a new coat and shared some time with him. God had given Samuel to Hannah and she, in her thankfulness, gave him back to God.
We may not drop off our kids at church and return them to God in this same way, but may we never forget that they belong to God! They are His children to be raised to know Him. We may have dreams and aspirations for our kids, but don't let them take away from them knowing God! Sunday sports events, clubs and activities that leave you no time for family devotions or even prayers before bed put other things before God! Make Him first in your lives, He made you first in His!
