Xx is for box.

This week we are concentrating on the final letter of the alphabet- Xx. Xx does not make its own sound at the beginning of a word, only in or at the end of the word, so we are having fun with boxes of all kinds this week.

The KDI for the week is gross-motor skills- children demonstrate strength, flexibility, balance, and timing in using their large muscles. We will be playing with large boxes this week- stacking them, lifting and balancing them, transporting them. Lots of big muscle use!

Table Activities- This week students will have the opportunity to make a box, color a box, play with boxes, pound golf tees in boxes, "Not a Box" coloring sheets, decorate hole-y boxes, decorate wooden boxes, and match boxes.

Small Group Activities- This week we will each make our own box, add Xx is for box to our journal, make a gift for a box and use kraft paper to complete a "Not a Box" scene.

Large Group Activities- We will play and build with boxes outside too!

Books of the Week- "Not a Box" by Antoinette Portis, "What to do with a Box" by Jane Yolen and "Boxitects" by Kim Smith.

Bible Story- This week we hear about the Emmaus Disciples.

Two of Jesus followers were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus, a small town about 7 miles from Jerusalem. It was Sunday afternoon, the Sunday after Jesus was killed on Friday.  As they were walking, they were talking about the events of the week before. Jesus had entered Jerusalem to shouts of "Hosanna" on Palm Sunday to Jesus being arrested on Thursday and crucified on Friday. What a week! And now some women say that they saw angels and they said Jesus is alive??!! Who knows what to believe! As they were walking, a man joined them and asked what they were talking about. They told him and were surprised that he seemed to know nothing of the latest news. As they told him, he asked questions and suggested Old Testament prophecies that pointed again and again to Jesus as the Christ, the promised Messiah.

When they reached Emmaus, the man made as if to travel farther, but the two disciples invited him to join them for the evening meal. As he broke the bread, he revealed himself as Jesus and then disappeared.

The disciples were astonished! This was Jesus all along, walking beside them, instructing them, enlightening them! Weren't our hearts burning within us?? They ran back to Jerusalem to the locked room where the disciples were hiding to tell them they had seen the Lord.  The other disciples shared how Jesus had appeared to Simon Peter. Jesus had risen!! He is alive!

Only this God gently instructs when you doubt, only this God came down to earth to sacrifice himself for the humans he loved, only this God doesn't abandon you when your faith is faltering! This God is like no other God! The only true God cares for you, knows your particular doubts and fears and gently leads you through his Word to the truth you need!

He is risen! He is risen. indeed!
